sketch vases

Julie Tolvanen (Puhdetyö Exhibition, 2019).

“I was so amazed to learn that molten glass can be cut using scissors that I decided to sketch some vases and literally cut them out of hot glass. An extra layer of playfulness came from the interpretation of my sketch by the person cutting the glass and all the lively, unplanned twists and turns that happened while the glass was being worked.

Materials: Mouth blown glass by Lasisirkus at Nuutajärvi, Finland.

PINE NEEDLES

Julie Tolvanen (Puhdetyö Exhibition, 2019).

PINE NEEDLES (on a Lake...on Snow...on a Trail). These panels began as a way to sketch and study a design for a repeat textile pattern using handstitched embroidery instead of drawing it with a pencil. The colors of the pine needles vibrate against the color of the backgrounds, just as they do in nature during the different seasons.

Material: Embroidered cotton broadcloth in 3 colors (Lake/Snow/Trail).

SHAPES

Mika Tolvanen (Puhdetyö Exhibition, 2019)

This collection is what happens when a product designer draws shapes and takes them to a glassmaster, a blacksmith, and a bronze caster. I am always sketching shapes that have nothing to do with a particular project. I took these sketches and mocked them up in 3D from a combination of foam, duct tape, and wax. These were then reproduced by skilled craftsmen in the actual materials.

Materials: Marvered hot-worked glass, wrought iron, cast bronze

TERASSI OUTDOOR COLLECTION

Studio Tolvanen (Design Within Reach, 2017).

Terassi's wide armrests let you set your drink or your phone down within arm’s reach. We liked that about lodge furniture we saw at Timberline Lodge in Oregon. We wanted the overall feeling to be familiar and friendly, but also lighter and modern. That was the start of a family that became Terassi Collection.  Terassi Collection is produced from teak with with comfortable pillow-like cushions upholstered in UV- and mildew-resistant Sunbrella fabric to withstand the elements. Made in Indonesia.

Hancock baskets

Studio Tolvanen (Furnishing Utopia, 2017)

Birch plywood and pine

Designed for an exhibition of furniture inspired by household objects at Hancock Shaker Village. Hancock Baskets were inspired by a laundry basket in a storage room at Hancock Shaker Village.

Four baskets make up the family - a Large Basket for laundry or magazines, a Bread Basket, a Serving Tray, and a Mushroom Hunting Basket. The four incorporate details from various baskets we liked in the archives, but the material is modern bent plywood - which we think the Shakers would have wholeheartedly embraced for its strength and lightness.

The Hand

Studio Tolvanen (Furnishing Utopia, 2017)

The Hand is a pine toy with a magnetic removable thumb (just for fun). The shape comes from a Mitten Mold used by Shakers to shrink knitted woolens to proper size.  Designed for an exhibition of furniture inspired by household objects at Hancock Shaker Village.
